World Post Day was celebrated on 9 October which, aimed at raising the awareness of the population and companies on the role of the postal sector and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries, commemorates the anniversary day of the creation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874.
In Portugal, World Post Day was marked with a commemorative ceremony organized by FPC – Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações (Portuguese Communications Foundation) at its premises. The event will be attended by João Cadete de Matos, in the capacity of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the FPC, and Teresa Salema, Chairman of the Executive Committee of this Foundation. The ceremony was closed by Ana Abrunhosa, Minister of Territorial Cohesion.
In this sessions, the awards were presented for "The Best Letter 2020" competition https://www.fpc.pt/pt/concurso-a-melhor-carta-2020-vencedores/, dedicated to the theme “Write a message to an adult about the world we live”, and the King D. Manuel I philatelic exhibition

To mark the occasion, the UPU organised a virtual event https://www.upu.int/en/Events/World-Post-Day – broadcast on UPU TV
https://tv.upu.int/, in which the winner of the 29th international letter-writing competition and awards were given for the Integrated Index for Postal Development (2IPD).
On World Post Day, the UPU also publicised a poster alluding to theme of the commemorations of 2020: “More than mail”.
