ANACOM takes part in workshop on ''Digital Transition, Digital Services and Inclusion''

ANACOM’s Chairman, João Cadete de Matos, took part on 14 July 2021 in the workshop on “Digital Transition, Digital Services and Inclusion”, held by Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Norte (the Commission for Coordination and Regional Development of the North - CCDR-Norte) with the aim of organising a “Thematic Reference Framework”, of operational and useful characteristics for the design of the “NORTE 2030 Operational Programme” and other regional funding instruments.

This workshop is part of a wide range of working sessions taking place between 12 and 21 July, with around 20 selected themes, which aim to achieve the following objectives:

i) assessing the 2014/2020 cycle, both of the evolution of the main indicators and of the investment supported under the 2014-2020 programming cycle in each theme;

ii) identifying key targets to be pursued by the Norte Region by 2030 in each theme, as well as the main action programmes and/or key anchor projects for their achievement;

iii) identifying the main aspects to be considered in the operationalisation model (e.g. contracts vs tenders, conditions for admissibility, preference criteria, reference costs, key aspects for simplification).

As the EU financing instruments for the 2021-2030 period are currently being structured, CCDR-Norte aims through these sessions to obtain contributions for the development of the “NORTH 2030 Action Plan”, thus seeking to identify the main action programmes and/or key anchor projects for implementing the regional strategy, as well as the respective operational model.

Throughout the various working sessions, participants analysed the situation in the thematic areas identified and proposed solutions for future development.

In the session on “Digital Transition, Digital Services and Inclusion”, ANACOM’s Chairman spoke about the country’s mobile broadband and fibre optics coverage, access to infrastructures and the relevance of Sistema de Informação de Infraestruturas Aptas (the Apt Infrastructure Information System - SIIA) in providing information on existing infrastructures, which enables demand and supply to meet and promotes infrastructure sharing. He also addressed the obligations set out in the 5G auction regulations, both coverage and network development, which provide for the installation of stations in business parks, hospitals, universities, among other locations.

He also mentioned the role of satellites as a way of bridging the coverage gaps in more remote or less densely populated regions.

In the same workshop, the Director-General of ANACOM’s Oporto Delegation, Luis Roque Pedro, also spoke about free technology zones.
