ANACOM authorises 5G technical trials in the 1800 MHz band

ANACOM has been giving authorisation for use of the radio spectrum for the purpose of conducting technical trails and scientific studies using different technologies, especially those that will contribute to the deployment of 5G in Portugal, in accordance with paragraph 3 of article 5 of Decree-Law no. 151-A/2000 of 20 Julyhttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=976037 (current wording).

In this context, and in addition to the authorisations previously issued, authorisation has now been granted to carry out 5G technical trials in the 1800 MHz frequency band, where operators already hold Rights of Use of Frequencies. To ensure compatibility with systems used in adjacent bands, performance of these technical trials must comply with the conditions of spectrum use defined in ECC Decision (06)13 on "Designation of the bands 880-915 MHz, 925-960 MHz, 1710-1785 MHz and 1805-1880 MHz for terrestrial UMTS, LTE, WiMAX and IoT cellular systems”, even while this Decision is not yet implemented in Portugal.

As in other cases, within the scope of its powers and responsibilities, performance of these technical trials will be duly monitored by ANACOM.

These initiatives make it possible to accumulate knowledge about new technologies and support preparation of the future commercial operation of 5G networks in a safer manner; this provides an opportunity to sustain the country's socioeconomic development and, consequently, society on a global scale.
