ANACOM has released a report on the signal quality of the digital terrestrial television (DTT) network in mainland Portugal during 2020, with information on the quality of the DTT service, broadcast by the operator MEO – Serviços de Comunicações e Multimédia. The service is assessed from the user's point of view.
The analysis was based on a range of technical parameters processed from more than 60 million observations, collected through the ANACOM’s network of hundreds of DTT signal monitoring probes distributed in a representative manner across the national territory. With this monitoring mechanism, ANACOM is able to anticipate and safeguard against any problems occurring in the reception of the DTT signal.
It should be noted that, in 2020, DTT signal coverage in Portugal was reformulated, with migration of the broadcasting network from a single frequency network (SFN) broadcasting on channel 56, to a multifrequency network (MFN). Based on an impact analysis of this change using probe-assisted measurements, it can be concluded that there were improvements in the parameters evaluated for the received signal in most locations.
For the year under analysis, the DTT service in mainland Portugal recorded an average availability rate of 99.6% and an equally high level of service stability. In contrast to previous studies, there is evidence of an improvement in both indicators compared to the previous year, reversing a persistent downward trend. The processed data also showed an improvement in service availability and a convergence in values between the coast and the interior, resulting in territorial homogenisation.
The study was produced as part of ANACOM's assigned responsibilities in terms of ensuring efficient management and oversight of the radio spectrum, and also as part of ANACOM's commitment towards citizens, to closely monitor the quality of broadcast DTT signals on an ongoing basis.
