On 15 February 2022, ANACOM implemented the Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/173, of 7 February 2022, on the harmonisation of the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz frequency bands for terrestrial systems capable of providing electronic communications services in the Union and repealing Decision 2009/766/EC.
This Decision aims to replace Commission Decision 2009/766/EC, of 16 October 2019, preserving, on the one hand, compatibility with systems operating in adjacent bands and changing, on the other hand, the technical regulatory framework applicable to the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz frequency bands, which become technologically neutral, thus allowing the deployment of 5G technology in both bands, while ensuring the continuity of service provision using previously authorized technologies, in particular GSM.
