Session "SMART Submarine Cables in a Sustainable Ocean"

ANACOM, in partnership with the Ocean Forum, organizes a session on "SMART Submarine Cables in a Sustainable Ocean: Global Ocean Observation for Climate Monitoring and Disaster Risk Reduction"https://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1724368, integrated as a side event to the United Nations (UN) Ocean Conference, "A Sustainable Ocean". This event takes place on June 28, 2022, from 3:15 pm to 5:00 pm, at the Pavilhão de Portugal, at Parque das Nações, in Lisbon.

Submarine telecommunications cables have been understood as a mere passive means of signal transmission. Thanks to a significant effort by the scientific community, Portuguese in particular, the same submarine cables are ready to add value beyond telecommunications and to be directly used for humanitarian purposes, such as environmental and seismic detection at the service of scientific communities and people, specifically for the last case, for the production of early warnings for tsunamis and earthquakes with enough time to significantly increase the mitigation of the effects of natural disasters, saving injuries, lives and property.

SMART (Scientific Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunication) cables can play a decisive role in collecting real-time data directly from the ocean floor, providing for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals recommended by the UN.

The agenda of the session "SMART Submarine Cables in a Sustainable Ocean: Global Ocean Observation for Climate Monitoring and Disaster Risk Reduction" includes high-level personalities as speakers: Chair of ANACOM; Chair of JTF SMART Cables; Chair of IPMA; Director General of Hydrographic Institute; Portuguese Minister of Economy and Sea.

Participation is free and open to all interested parties, only subject to prior registration, until June 28, by filling out the registration form http://onesustainableocean.forumoceano.pt/index.php.
