5G mobile networks outperform 4G networks

Between January and December 2022, around 28% of mobile access tests on the NET.medehttps://netmede.pt/app App were carried out with a 5G mobile network, with a total of 2735 tests. The average results of the 5G mobile network tests (185 Mbps download speed, 34 Mbps upload speed and 25 ms latency) were better than those of the 4G network, with 144 Mbps higher download speed than 4G, 20 Mbps higher upload speed and 9 milliseconds less latency than 4G. Also with regard to the results of fixed access tests, the performance of 5G networks is better in terms of download speed, with 65 Mbps more.

The geographical analysis of 5G mobile network tests from January to December 2022 shows that:

  • 182 municipalities (out of a total of 308) recorded tests on the 5G mobile network (59% of municipalities)
  • The five best-performing municipalities in terms of average download speed in the 5G mobile network registered values above 675 Mbps: Estarreja (850 Mbps), Vila Real (751 Mbps), Pombal (705 Mbps), Póvoa do Varzim (684 Mbps) and Vizela (678 Mbps)
  • In terms of upload speed, the five municipalities with better results in the 5G mobile network recorded values close to  or above 100 Mbps: Estarreja (125 Mbps), Portimão (116 Mbps), Chamusca (112 Mbps), Caminha (105 Mbps) and Albufeira (98 Mbps)
  • The average latency of the tests carried out on the 5G mobile network was 13.5 ms in Almeirim and around 15 ms in 8 municipalities

It should be noted that these are the results of tests carried out in the NET.mede App (Android or iOS), and are therefore not representative of the generality of users in each region.
