ICP laboratories obtain new accreditation

/ Updated on 24.01.2008

The radio metrology and electromagnetic compatibility laboratories of the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP) are amongst the first laboratories in Portugal to be accredited according to the new international quality standard for this type of testing facility, in force from January 1, 2002.

ICP's laboratories are an integral part of ICP's technical structure, and are used by the Institute within the framework of its inspection powers and to provide services to the market.

ICP's laboratories have been frequently contacted by external organisations in order to carry out tests of various types of equipment. The new accreditation, that substitutes the former accreditation, observes the quality standard NP EN ISO/IEC 17025. The main strategic guidelines of this normative reference, which is obligatory from January onwards, are client relationships, good professional practises and compliance with ISO 9000 norms.

Between January and November, 165 tests were carried out, of which 135 were commissioned by the market and 30 resulted from ICP's internal activities. 345 calibrations of electrical power were also carried out for clients' equipment and 195 were carried out for ICP, corresponding to a total of 108 equipment items.

The Radioelectric Metrology Laboratory (RML) is equipped to calibrate radiocommunications analysers, measurement devices (such as multimeters and oscilloscopes) and signal generators. The Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory (LCEM) is equipped to check the conformity of electrical and electronic equipment. This laboratory has conducted tests of prototypes and final versions of domestic appliances (vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens etc.), portable tools and data processing equipment (computer screens and processors, keyboards, printers, audio-speakers etc.)

The Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal also has a Radiocommunications Equipment Testing Laboratory and a Cable Television Laboratory.
