European Commission - Information Society under reorganization

/ Updated on 18.05.2004

The European Commission Information Society is under restructuring. The main changes with impact in the electronic communications sector are as follows:

  • Directorate A will from now on be called ?Internet, network security and general affairs?, Units A1, A2 and A4 being transferred to the new Directorate G - ?eEurope and information society technology policies?;
  • Unit B5 (?Services related to the Internet?) is transferred to Directorate A, integrating Unit A1 (?Internet; Network and information security?);
  • Unit B6 (?International Aspects?) is transferred to Directorate A, with the name ?International Relations (Unit A2)?;
  • A new Unit B5 is created (?Procedures related to national regulatory measures?), which will integrate the Working Group of Article 7 of this Directorate-General, which processes notifications on Member-states market analysis.

The current Commissioner for Enterprise and Information Society, Mr. Erkki Liikanen, is assuming the position of governor within the Finish Central Bank next 12 July.  The Finish Government has not yet disclosed the name of the new Commissioner.

Mr. Ján Fige?, from Slovakia, is one of the new European Commission members who is going to work together with the Commissioner in the Enterprise and Information Society areas. Following the enlargement of the European Union (EU) with the accession of the Central and Eastern European Countries (PECO), on 1 May, the 10 new Member-states did not receive any specific dossier, each one of them being associated with the work of a current Commissioner, so as to facilitate their integration in the work of the Commission.  This provisional situation is justified due to the proximity of the term of the mandate of the new Commissioners - the current Commission, chaired by Romano Prodi, finishes its mandate on 31 September 2004.
