Galileo and the European space policy

The second call for proposals for research activities dedicated to the Galileo European satellite radio-navigation service was launched on the 1st of June, followed on the 2nd of June by one information day on the framework and structure of the call for proposals. This second call has an overall budget of 67 million euros, higher than the first one, launched in July 2003 and already closed, of 19 million euros.

At the level of the European space programme there were also some developments, at a time when experts from Member-states met with representatives from international organizations, on the 7th of June, to discuss the main guidelines of the programme. In this meeting, particular attention was paid to security issues, namely control of borders, prevention of conflicts, humanitarian missions and fight against organized crime and terrorism. Also on the 4th of June there was a meeting with the European Commission, the European Space Agency (ESA) and several elements of the European Space Programme, followed by the launch of a new Framework Agreement between the European Union and ESA, entities that, at the beginning of 2005, will have to submit a European Space Programme proposal.
