There were 1,37 million cable television service customers at the end of the second quarter of 2004. The most recent statistical data collected by the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) also indicates that this service is installed and active in about 27 percent of portuguese households.
Compared to the previous quarter, the cable television operators' number of customers increased by 1,2 percent, with the adhesion of 16 000 new subscribers. Regarding the same period of the previous year, growth was on the order of 6,3 percent.
The number of cable television subscribers in our country is equivalent to 13 percent of the Portuguese population.
With a 50 percent share, Lisbon tops the national subscriber distribution ranking. But the Madeira Autonomous Region is the annual growth rate leader for the second consecutive quarter.
Thirty-eight percent of total cabled households (3,6 million homes in June 2004) are subscribers to cable television networks.
During the period in question there were 357 000 customers of satellite television service via Direct to Home (DTH) technology, an alternative to cable infrastructure for television signal distribution. The number of DTH subscribers rose by 16 percent in the last year, mainly distributed in the North and Centre regions.
