/ Updated on 30.01.2007

The complement of main telephone accesses installed at customer request stood at about 4,140,000 accesses at the end of the third quarter of 2004, corresponding to penetration of 40 access per 100 inhabitants, 0.5% less than in the previous quarter. During the same period the Grupo PT accounted for 93.7% of accesses, versus 94% in the previous quarter.

When considering the complement of total accesses, which includes public payphones and the operators' own complement, the number of accesses rises to 4,228,000, or 0.6% less than in the previous quarter. In this case, the Grupo PT's share is 93.8% versus 94.1% in the previous quarter.

The number of direct access fixed telephone service customers continued to fall, standing at 3.1 million customers at the end of September, 0.3% less than in the previous quarter. The Grupo PT accounts for 94% of the customers, 0.3% less than in the previous quarter.

The modes of indirect access in pre-selection and call-to-call selection have on the contrary continued to grow. At the end of September there were about 420,000 pre-selection customers, 4.8% more than in the previous quarter. In call-to-call selection the number of customers rose by 2% to 85,000.

Total traffic originating in the fixed network between July and September 2004 was 2.778 billion minutes, resulting from 825 million calls - for year-on-year drops of 16% and 8% respectively. These declines arise from the drop in internet access traffic via telephone line (dial-up), due to the expansion of access via ADSL.

For just voice traffic the third quarter registered 2.082 billion minutes resulting from 791 million calls, for year-on-year declines of 4.1% and 4.7% respectively. National traffic totalled 1.957 billion minutes, while outgoing international traffic accounted for 125,086 minutes.

During the same period indirect access accounted for 18.8% of national traffic minutes and about 18.3% of outgoing international traffic minutes.

With respect to voice market shares, the Grupo PT saw its share fall in the third quarter of 2004, for both minutes and calls. In the third quarter its share of the minutes was 77.2%, versus 82.2% in the same quarter of the previous year, a drop of five percentage points. The decline is the same in total traffic, which includes the internet. In the latter case PT had an 82.8% share in the third quarter, versus 88.1% in the same quarter of the previous year. Public payphones have been increasing and totalled 44,656 units at the end of September, for a 7.5% increase in year-on-year terms.

At the end of September there were 147,641 non-mobile ported numbers, 7.4% more than in the previous quarter. There were 21 entities authorised to provide the service, though only 12 were operational.
