Broadband grew by 12.5% in the first quarter of 2005

/ Updated on 30.01.2007

At the end of the first quarter of this year there were nearly 966,000 broadband Internet users - including those who access by ADSL, cable-modem or other formats, such as FWA for example - for a penetration rate of 9.2%, versus 5.5% in the same period of the previous year.

During the first quarter of the year, the number of broadband users rose by 12.5% over the previous quarter, corresponding to an increase of 107,000 customers. In year-on-year terms there was 68% growth of broadband customers.

In the first three months of the year, ADSL access supplanted cable-modem, for at the end of March there were 499,000 ADSL customers in Portugal, while cable-modem access totalled 464,000 customers.

According to ANACOM data, ADSL predominated for the first time, as it now accounts for 52% of total broadband accesses. During the quarter under review this access type achieved growth of 18.7%, corresponding to 79,000 customers. Cable-modem access grew by 6.6% or 29,000 accesses.

There were 4,210,000 dial-up access customers at the end of the first quarter of this year, which makes for a total of 5,176,000 Internet customers in Portugal, 9.2% more than in the previous quarter and 47.8% more than in the same period of the previous year.

The fact that the number of dial-up accesses encompasses residential and business accesses, free and charged, must be taken into account. It is common for a dial-up user to be the customer of various ISPs (Internet Service Providers), so this number should not be used as an estimate of the number of Internet users in Portugal.
