Portugal has 1.436 million cable television subscribers

At the end of March there were 1.436 million users who subscribed to cable television distribution service, implying 1.4% quarterly growth of the subscription base. In absolute terms, this growth reflects the adhesion of about 20,000 new subscribers between January and March.

The percentage of service subscribers vis-à-vis population remained practically unchanged at 13.7%.

The distribution of television subscribers in the country's various regions also remained unchanged, with Lisbon concentrating the most subscribers, half of the total. In the first quarter, the number of cable television users in Lisbon increased by 1.4% to 728,000. The North region, with 347,000 customers, was one of those which registered sharp growth over the previous quarter, 1.8%. The Centre region counted at the end of March 171,000 cable television users, recording 1.4% growth in the number of subscribers. The Alentejo, the region with the fewest service users, 38,000, recorded the most growth, 1.9%.

At the end of the first quarter of 2005 about 29% of all Portuguese households subscribed to cable television service. The Madeira and Alentejo regions continue to be those with respectively the highest, 64.1%, and lowest, 9.1%, adhesion to cable television distribution service.

The 3.6 million cabled households represent about 73% of total Portuguese households, 7 more percentage points than the figure recorded in the previous quarter.

During the first three months of this year, 33,000 houses were cabled.

Some 39% of cabled homes subscribed to the service, 0.2 points more than in the previous quarter.

The Lisbon region has the most cabled households, 47%, followed by the North region with 27% and the Centre with 14%. The Algarve accounts for 5% of cabled houses, a figure which for the Alentejo drops to 3% and for the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores to 2%.

At the end of the first quarter, the service of television distribution via DTH (Direct to Home) technology had 389,000 subscribers, 1.4% more than in the previous quarter. During the quarter nearly 5,000 people subscribed to this service.
