Broadband clients grow 10.5% on the second semester

The number of broadband clients reached 1.067 million during this year's second quarter, a 61.3% growth compared to the same period of last year and 10.5% versus the previous quarter. From the overall figure, 573,282 clients have ADSL broadband connections and 491,382 cable modem broadband connections. ADSL already stands for 53.7% of all broadband Internet accesses, while cable's share fell to 46%.

During the quarter under analysis, the number of ADSL clients rose 14.8% on the previous quarter and 95% on the same period of last year. Cable modem registered a slower growth, of 6% on the previous quarter, and of 34.2% compared to the same period of last year.

According to ANACOM's data, three out of four new broadband accesses are ADSL.

ADSL - based broadband boost took the contribution from the growth in the number of unbundled loops, reflecting the operators' stake in reaching clients directly and in improving the conditions of the Local Loop Offer.

Thus, new telecommunications operators, alternative to the incumbent Portugal Telecom, managed to get 40% of all new broadband clients during the second quarter. Between April and June, the Internet market grew with 102 thousand new broadband clients, of which 74 thousand opted for ADSL and the remaining for cable modem. According to ANACOM's data, four out of each ten new broadband clients are new operators.

Broadband penetration rate grew to 10.2% in the second quarter, one point above that of the previous quarter. ADSL broadband penetration rate was of 5.5% in the second quarter, versus 4.8% in the previous quarter. The penetration rate of broadband Internet by cable modem was of 4.7%, versus 4.4% in the previous quarter.

Regarding dial-up access clients, of 4.526 million in the second quarter, the total number of Internet access service clients grew to 5.594 million.

By the end of the second quarter, there were 40 entities registered and entitled to provide Internet access services in Portugal.
