ANACOM determines the price reduction of the signal distribution and broadcasting service by 17%

ICP-ANACOM determined at the last meeting of the Board of Directors that PT Comunicações should lower the price of the signal distribution and broadcasting service by at least 17%. With this decision, the regulatory authority aims to guarantee that the price system of the service in question complies with the principle of cost orientation.

The assessment carried out by the regulatory authority led to the conclusion that there is a difference between ruling prices and costs, which is all the more significant since, at the present time, no other operator is providing a service which, in terms of quality, coverage and price can be considered as providing a viable alternative to the television signal distribution and broadcasting service provided by PT Comunicações. This company currently maintains the obligation to provide cost orientation, since there is no data to suggest that this obligation should be withdrawn.

The regulatory authority further deemed the service margin to be significant, and took due regard of the need to promote, swiftly and in a sustained way, an increased adherence between the principle of cost orientation and the prices of the television signal transport and broadcasting service provided by PT Comunicações, particularly having regard to the social repercussion of this service and its relevance in the global context of the Information Society development. The preponderant position of PT Comunicações as a provider of television signal distribution and broadcasting service was also one of the aspects considered by the regulatory authority in the assessment that led to the decision to impose the price reduction.
