Broadband gains ground in Internet access

According to data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP), the number of customers of Internet access services rose to 3,055,000 at the end of the third quarter of 2001. Broadband accesses - cable and ADSL - also reached a previously unknown high in the same period.

In the third quarter of last year, there were more than 70 thousand cable Access customers, which is equivalent to 27.3% of all paid accesses and 2.3% of all paid and gratuitous accesses. The number of ADSL accesses increased 100% in comparison with the same period for the previous year, reaching a figure of 1,252 customers.

Nevertheless, the services commonly known as gratuitous Internet access continue to be the most representative, being responsible in September alone for 92% of all Internet registered accesses.

The strong base customer growth must consider the existence of overlapping situations, i.e., some users enjoying more than one gratuitous subscription to access services.

In September there were 47 ISPs registered with the ICP, of which 28 were effectively active.
