/ Updated on 11.10.2002

The number of customers of the land mobile service rose to 7.98 million by the end of 2001, according to data compiled by the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). This level confirms that the growth capacity of mobile telephone networks was maintained. In the space of one year, the three mobile GSM networks operating in Portugal secured 1.3 million new subscribers - equivalent to a growth rate of 19.7% between December 2000 and December 2001.

Portugal has thus attained a penetration rate of 77.3 subscribers per 100 inhabitants, standing above the European Union average of 73.5 subscribers per 100 inhabitants.

During 2001, each call originated in a mobile network - and destined for another mobile network or fixed network - had an average duration of 91 seconds. During the same period, 5.7 billion calls were made from mobile networks, representing a total of 8.6 billion conversation minutes.

In terms of incoming traffic, i.e. calls destined for a mobile network and originated in a fixed network or a different mobile network, 16% growth between 2000 and 2001 was recorded in the volume of conversation minutes and 12% in the number of calls made.

In absolute terms, incoming traffic to mobile networks represented 2.2 billion conversation minutes and 1.3 billion calls made.
