The new Council elected at the 2006 Plenipotentiary Conference (PP06) held on 6-24 November in the Turkish city of Antalya, held an (extraordinary) opening session in its new format at the end of that conference so that it could begin operations, and also to start the work that PP06 deemed to be most urgent.
The following significant developments took place at the meeting:
- The president of the extraordinary session, to be maintained for the 2007 session of this body, was elected;
- The election of the president and vice-president of the Standing Committees, which in this case, will be only one, was postponed to the 2007 session;
- The date and length of the 2007 Council Session was decided;
- PP Decisions that required treatment at this Council session, namely on the launch of the following groups and tasks: Council group on management and budget; study on the participation of all interested parties in Union activities associated to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS); and study on the definitions and terminology associated to the construction of trust and safety in the use of ICTs.
