ENUM Seminar - June 24, 2002

/ Updated on 25.06.2002

ANACOM will hold a workshop under the terms of the ENUM (Telephone Number Mapping) protocol on June 24, 2002. The session will start at 9. 30 a.m. and will take place during the morning of June 24, 2002 at the Hotel Alfa, in Lisbon.

Although the participation in this event is mainly intended for telecommunication service providers, inscriptions are open to anyone who wishes to be present - please use the enclosed registration link.

Themes approached during the workshop cover aspects related to the use of Domain Name System (DNS) databases for ENUM purposes, as well as those associated to the technical, administrative and operational issues of the implementation of that protocol. Matters related to new services, the way to ensure market competition and the consumers protection will probably be subjects for debate. In addition, a complete view about the plans for ENUM trials in Europe will be presented.

ENUM is a protocol developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which allows telephone numbers to be mapped into compact strings of characters - Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). Its rules, specified in RFC 2916, are based on DNS architecture which relates IP addresses to "names".

In order to create a ENUM domain name from an E.164 number, keeping the hierarchic structure of domain names, the order of the digits, including the CC (Country Code) is reversed; dots are placed between each digit and the domain ". e164.tld" is appended to the end ("tld" - Top Level Domain - is under study). For instance, the number 351 21 721 10 00 is mapped into the ENUM Domain name 0.0.0.1.1.2.7.1.2.1.5.3.e164.tld, which allows to access to the communication resources and services associated to the number.
