Meeting Beneficiaries/Financers/ITU - Maputo

/ Updated on 14.05.2008

The Mozambican capital Maputo served as venue last 17-18 April for a meeting whose aim was to promote information sharing between the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the beneficiary countries of the organisation's Centre for Excellence in Africa, to enable them to participate in and influence the structure and actions to carry out under this project. All relevant players took part in the meeting, namely the beneficiary countries, financers and the ITU.

The meeting identified the beneficiary countries' needs and determined that training actions will be undertaken in 2008 in the areas of regulation, spectrum management and telecommunications marketing. The composition of the Steering Committee and Advisory Committee was also worked out - these management bodies will be responsible for monitoring project implementation and will include the beneficiary countries as well as Portugal.

Regarding financing for the project in question, ANACOM announced in the name of Portugal the readiness to allocate a 500,000 dollar (nearly 314,000 euro) subsidy. This financing will allow the fees of training action participants to be reduced and the programme to be extended to 2011. Besides the monetary contribution, ANACOM also indicated that it could cover the cost for Portuguese trainers and experts to participate in training actions of this Centre that are within this Authority?s scope of action.
