Pan-European mobile satellite services

On 7 August 2008, the Commission issued a call for applications for the selection of operators of Pan-European systems providing mobile satellite communications, under the terms of Decision no. 626/2008/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 June on the selection and authorisation of systems providing mobile satellite services.

This decision, whose objective is to develop a competitive internal market for mobile satellite services and the gradual extension of coverage in all Member States, established a community procedure for the common selection of operators of systems providing mobile satellite communications which use the 2 GHz radio spectrum pursuant to Decision 2007/98/EC (encompassing the radio spectrum of 1.980 MHz to 2.010 MHz in the case of Earth-space communications and 2.170 MHz to 2.200 MHz in the case of space-Earth communications). In addition, standards were established with respect to the authorisation, coordinated by Member States, of operators selected to use the radio spectrum designated in these frequencies bands for the provision of mobile satellite communications systems.

Interested parties may submit their applications by 7 October 2008, sending them by registered mail or delivering them by hand to the following address:
