The number of Internet access services subscribers exceeded 4.4 million at the end of the 2nd quarter 2002, more 48% than in the same period of last year, according to figures disclosed by Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). Out of this value, 269 thousand correspond to broadband accesses, including cable and ADSL, which translates a 122% growth as compared to the 1st quarter.

Most broadband accesses are delivered through cable technology: 98% of total. The remaining ones are delivered through ADSL, which had more than five thousand subscribers in June, being equivalent to a 40% growth over March.

The service penetration rate - including all types of access - reached, over the 2nd quarter 2002, 43 accesses by one hundred inhabitants, against 29 accesses over the same period of last year.

In June, there were 53 entities registered for Internet access services provision, 30 of them being already in operation.
