At the end of June 2008, there were 1.92 million users with mobile broadband Internet access in Portugal and 1.62 million fixed internet customers, 1.57 million of which were broadband customers. Mobile broadband grew at a rapid rate, rising 11.8 per cent compared to the previous quarter (over 202 thousand users) and 94.7 per cent compared to June 2007.
Along with the high rate of growth seen in the number of mobile broadband accesses, their use has also grown. The number of mobile broadband users who were active during the period being reported grew by around 12 per cent over the quarter, rising to 886 thousand users, a figure that is 147 per cent higher than the value recorded in the second quarter of 2007.
The total number of fixed Internet access service customers (1.62 million) fell in the second quarter of 2008, by around 0.4 per cent compared to the previous quarter and by 0.7 per cent year-on-year. The majority of these customers use broadband (1.57 million or 97 per cent of the total), with dial up accesses representing little more than 55 thousand customers.
The decline in the number of fixed Internet access clients was caused by a fall in ADSL customers (-1 per cent), whereas the remaining technologies saw increases in customer numbers. However, ADSL remains the principle broadband Internet access technology, now representing 58.3 per cent of the total. Cable modem is used by 40.3 per cent of fixed broadband customers.
Meanwhile, the broadband penetration rate in Portugal stood at 14.8 per 100 inhabitants for fixed access and at 18 per 100 inhabitants for mobile access.
