ITU Council - 2008 session


The Council of the International telecommunication Union (ITU) met from 12 to 21 November 2008 at the organisation's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Portugal was represented at the meeting by ANACOM.

This session of the Council is due to approve the Operational Plan of the three ITU sectors for the period 2009-2012, analyse the activities carried out by the ITU in respect of the implementation of the results of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and to consider the possibility of increasing the number of member states represented in the Council to 47, with the allocation of an additional place to Region A (Americas).

Meanwhile, on 12 and 13 November a High Level Segment (HLS) of ministerial representatives took place with the aim of promoting debate on the issue of cyber-security and the contribution of information and communication technologies (ICT) to mitigating the impact of climate change.

On the day after the HLS, a campaign will be launched  to publicise the World Telecommunications Policy Forum (WTPF) of the ITU, to be held in Portugal in the Congress Centre of Lisbon from 22 to 24 April 2009 at the invitation of the Portuguese government. The WTPF is the forum appointed by the Plenipotentiary Conference for the discussion of strategies and policies with respect to issues of great interest and impact on the changing world of telecommunications.
