Fixed Telephone Service - traffic evolution during the third quarter of 2002


The fixed telephone service users generated 3.5 billion minutes in national and international outgoing telephone calls during the third quarter of this year, according to data of Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). During the same period, 39 thousand numbers were ported. The service penetration rate amounted to 42.1 telephones by one hundred inhabitants.

During this quarter, PT Comunicações was responsible for approximately 88.7% of the total amount of originated traffic, in minutes, holding 89.3 % of national traffic and 76.0% of international outgoing traffic.

In absolute terms and as far as the total amount of operators are concerned, routed traffic through the fixed telephone service dropped by 6.8%: 3.5 billion minutes registered in the third quarter of 2002 as compared to the 3.8 billion minutes registered during the second quarter of the same year. This decrease was higher in national calls (6.9%) and lower in international outgoing calls (2.5%).

As compared to the same quarter of 2001, there was a reduction of 6.4% in the total traffic volume routed by the fixed telephone service providers. The national and international outgoing traffic dropped by 6.4% and 6.7%, respectively, between the third quarters of 2001 and 2002.

About 91.9% of total traffic originated during the third quarter of 2002 consisted in (in terms of conversation minutes) communications made through direct access.  This type of access is more relevant in national communications (92.3%) than in international outgoing communications (81%).

The number of primary telephone accesses amounted to 4.35 millions in September, 0.5% less than in June.

Regarding the range of primary telephone accesses, 95.6% belongs to PT Comunicações while the market share of the remaining operators amounts to 4.4%.

As to the total number of accesses, 99.8% are assured by copper-wire (pairs), fibre optics and cable, with FWA (fixed wireless access) accounting for the remainder.

As to accesses assured by the new service Providers, 94.9% are assured by copper (pairs), optical fibre and cable. The remaining 5.1% are assured by using FWA.

Finally, the total amount of ported numbers during the third quarter was of 39,169, corresponding to an increase of 68.5% as compared to the previous quarter. There was an increase of 68.3% and 164.0% regarding the geographic ported numbers and numbers with 800 and 808 prefixes, respectively.

At the end of the 3rd quarter of 2002, the licensed fixed telephone service providers amounted to 27, 14 of which were in operation.

Considering the universe of Providers in operation, 7 assured direct and indirect access traffic, 2 exclusively assured direct access traffic and 5 only assured indirect access traffic.
