The number of users of the land mobile service amounted to 8.34 millions at the end of the third quarter 2002, 2.8% more than in the previous quarter and equivalent to 220 thousand new subscribers, according to data disclosed by Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). Out of the total amount of customers, 78% are subscribers of prepaid access cards.
The service penetration rate reached therefore 80.7 users per one hundred inhabitants, Portugal being above the European average, which was positioned at 77% at the end of third quarter of this year.
On the same date, users of the three national mobile networks generated 2.34 thousand million minutes of voice telephone traffic, 1.9% more than in the previous quarter. Out of this value, 1.52 thousand million conversation minutes were made to the same mobile network.
The number of voice calls originated by users amounted to 1.42 thousand million during the third quarter, 3.2% more than in the previous quarter. Out of these, 291.38 million calls were made to other mobile networks.
Each call generated by the land mobile service users lasted, in average, 99 seconds.
During the third quarter, service users received 932.95 million minutes of voice calls, 6.5% more than in the previous quarter. Out of the total amount of minutes received, 470.28 million came from other mobile networks.
The number of voice calls received by users amounted to 528.92 million, 4.9% more than during the second quarter 2002. Out of these, 295.50 million came from other mobile networks.
Each call received by users, during the third quarter, lasted, in average, 106 seconds.
As to traffic of data during the same period, 542.23 million written messages (SMS) were sent, 15.4% more than in the previous quarter. 8.34 million WAP calls were made, representing 10.26 million traffic minutes, which translates a variation of 6.7% and -5,8%, respectively, between the second and third quarters of this year.
Each service subscriber sent, during this quarter, an average of 65 written messages (SMS), 12% more than in the previous quarter.
