WTPF-09 in Lisbon

The next World Telecommunication Policy Forum will take place at the invitation of the Portuguese government from 22 to 24 April 2009 at the Lisboa Congress Centre. WTPF-09, the fourth time the event has been held, will be preceded by a meeting of the Group of Experts (GoE) and an informative session given to strategic debate on the current economic crisis, held in the same venue on 20 and 21 April respectively.

The world forum (WTPF) takes place within the context of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialist agency of the United Nations in the field of telecommunications. The aim of the forum is to promote discussion and the exchange of views on issues of telecommunications policy and regulation, in particular, global and inter-sectoral issues, with particular focus on the interests and needs of developing countries, where modern technologies and services can make a significant contribution to the development of the telecommunications infrastructure.

Participation of WTPF-09 is open to all interested parties, in particular Member States and ITU sector members, but prior registration is necessary on the ITU's website.

The main topics for discussion at WTPF-09 will be:

  • Convergence, including Internet-related public policy matters,
  • Next generation networks (NGN),
  • Emerging telecommunications policy and regulatory issues,
  • Emerging issues related to the International Telecommunication Regulations (adopted in Melbourne in 1988).
