/ Updated on 07.02.2003

Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) disclosed a text-only version of its Internet site. This version allows the Portuguese communications regulator's information to be consulted in small portable devices, without graphical interference, and also through equipment suitable for visually desabled persons and other citizens with special needs.

With this text-only version of ANACOM's website, the information disclosed in the Internet by the communications regulator reaches all users. Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações, aware of its social responsibility, joins the European Year of People with Disabilities.

Disclosing the text channel, ANACOM also assumes its contribution to the development of the Information Society, in a pioneering way in the Portuguese public administration. Its website text-only version runs in all platforms and is accessible by all the devices available in the market, complying therefore with the accessibility rules that were instituted internationally.

Examples of these devices are those that have a small screen, such as PDA and mobile phones, accesses to interactive television as well as assistive technology equipment such as screen readers and Braille notetakers to be used by citizens with special needs.

Text information free of images may be accessed through the address /txt/. Most of the approximately ten thousand pages in the website are already transferred into this new version, including most of the online services provided by ANACOM. The service forms present at this desk are expected to be available soon.

More than 10% of the European population is estimated to have a significant disability or one or more disabilities to use the standard equipment available in the market. Examples of these disabilities are hearing difficulties and manual capability insufficiency.

Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) is the Portuguese telecommunications and postal regulator.
