Transition to digital terrestrial television

Today saw the publication of Resolution of Council of Ministers no. 26/2009, which establishes the basic methodology for the transition to the digital terrestrial television broadcasting system and the date of the switch-off of television transmissions of the terrestrial analogue system. This resolution comes into force tomorrow, 18 March 2009.

Accordingly, the switch-off of terrestrial analogue television transmission throughout the national territory shall occur by 26 April 2012, while it is incumbent upon ANACOM, as part of its remit of managing the spectrum, to publish the detailed plan of the termination of analogue terrestrial transmissions f each transmitter or relay station.

ANACOM is also responsible for promoting the conditions necessary to ensure the transition to digital, and therefore the switch-off of terrestrial analogue television transmissions. In this context, it will accompany the entire process of analogue-digital transition, presenting recommendations to stakeholders in the process as necessary and, where appropriate, to the Government itself.

To assist ANACOM, the Council of Ministers decided to establish a group to monitor the migration to digital television (GAM-TD), chaired by a representative of this Authority.  This monitoring group will bring together the efforts of those most directly involved in the analogue-digital transition, and its members shall report relevant data on a quarterly basis, as well as information on actions conducted and to be conducted in this area either individually or by means of association formed for this purpose.
