Digital terrestrial television is launched

Portugal Telecom has begun digital transmissions of the free television channels (RTP, RTP2, SIC, TVI, RTP Açores and RTP Madeira) in 29 locations in Portugal, covering around 40% of the national population.

The areas covered by the initiative are: Alcochete, Almada, Alpiarça, Amadora, Barreiro, Benavente, Chaves, Coimbra, Entroncamento, Évora, Faro, Funchal, Gaia, Golegã, Lisbon, Mangualde, Matosinhos, Moita, Montijo, Oeiras, Olhão, Palmela, Ponta Delgada, Porto, Salvaterra de Magos, Seixal, Sintra, Torres Novas and Viana do Castelo.

This comes in the context of the European Commission's decision according to which Member States have to migrate from their analogue systems to digital by 2012, and as a result of which the Portuguese Government set out that the analogue signal should be switched off by 26 April 2012.
