Portuguese Presidency

Portugal took over the CEPT presidency on the 1 October 2002. Mr. Saraiva Mendes, member of the Board of Directors of ANACOM, is the President of CEPT during the Portuguese Presidency.

Priority Themes

The Portuguese Presidency identified the following themes to be particularly focused during its Presidency:

  • CEPT promotion and disclosure at internal and external level;
  • To increase and strengthen cooperation with the regional organizations with which CEPT has agreements within this scope: Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), African Telecommunications Union (ATU), CITEL(Inter-American Telecommunications Commission), Arab Telecommunication Council of Ministers (ATCM), and Regional Commonwealth in the field of Communications (RCC);
  • Involvement of CEPT in the preparation of the World Summit on the Information Society, which is being prepared under the auspices of the United Nations;
  • Development, within CEPT, of a coordination policy of applications to posts in international postal and communications organizations;
  • Negotiation of the cooperation agreement between CEPT and the European Commission as well as involvement and respective systematization of CEPT in the issues associated with the application of the new community regulatory framework.

Dates and places of the Assemblies

The second CEPT Assembly under the Portuguese Presidency will take place in Madeira from 9 to 10 September 2003. 

The first CEPT assembly under the Portuguese Presidency took place in Algarve from 6 to 7 March 2003.
