Rights to use frequencies in the 2.6 GHz range

By determination of 17 June 2009, ANACOM has given approval to the report on the consultation on the allocation of usage rights in the 2500-2690 MHz frequency band (also known as the 2.6 GHz band) for the use of publicly available electronic communications services.

As part of the consultation, whose launch was ordered by determination of 11 December 2008, comments were received from the following: Grupo Portugal Telecom, Grupo Represa/Telecocable, Intel Corporation, Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks, Sonaecom, Vodafone Portugal, WiMAX Forum and ZON TV Cabo Portugal. Comment were also received from Martin Stroom, a WLAN user and radio amateur.

The consultation report presents a summary of the responses received, reflecting the broad interest manifested by the Portuguese market for making this frequency band available for the operation of publically available electronic communications services, in line with Commission Decision 2008/477/EC. Likewise the report sets out the position taken by ANACOM with respect to the issues raised, involving the conditions for making the spectrum in question available, as well as the timing, albeit indicative, for the actions which will lead up to the release of the 2.6 GHz band.
