FDTI - Fundação para a Divulgação das Tecnologias de Informação (Foundation for the Propagation of the Information Technologies) launched on 26 June the fourth phase of the project ''A smile with ICTs'' at the Hospital Centre of Alto Minho, in Viana do Castelo. The launch of this 4th phase of the Project will also involve São João Hospital in Oporto, the local health unit of Guarda, and the São Teotónio Hospital in Viseu. Official ceremonies will be held on 3 July, in Oporto, at 10 am, and on 6 July, in Guarda, at 10 am, and in Viseu at 6h30 pm.
The goal of this project, which ANACOM has been sponsoring since its inception in 2005, is to provide paediatric units of public hospitals with technological equipment that will provide their younger patients, from 2 to 12/14 years, with the chance to engage in leisure activities, to contact family and friends and to keep up with their schoolwork. Aimed also at technicians, hospital volunteers and patients’ families, the project has two approaches: the first is to install equipment such as multimedia computers with leisure and educational software and broadband internet connections; the other is to provide training to the children’s carers.
This new phase will last two years and will go on to involve six other paediatric units in public hospitals: Sousa Martins Hospital in Guarda, São João Hospital in Oporto, Hospital Centre of Trás-os Montes and Alto Douro, EPE, in Vila Real, Hospital Centre of Alto Minho, in Viana do Castelo, District Hospital of Leiria, in Leiria, and São Teotónio Hospital, in Viseu.
This four-year project has the support of the Ministry of Health and of the Secretaria de Estado da Juventude e do Desporto (State Secretary for Youth and Sports) and the cooperation of public hospitals, as well as the following partners, in addition to ANACOM: Hewlett-Packard (HP), Trivalor, Optimus, Porto Editora, Lifetech and IPJ - Instituto Português da Juventude (Portuguese Youth Institute).
