The future of telecommunications and media technologies in Portugal

On 7 and 8 July, as part of the event "Predictions & Broadband Summit" (Next Generation Services: Innovation in Public Services, in Businesses and Communities), organised by APDC - Associação Portuguesa para o Desenvolvimento das Comunicações (Portuguese Association for the Development of Communications), a presentation was made of the second edition of the study TMT Predictions - Portugal 2009/2010, authored by Deloitte in conjunction with APDC, and the study commissioned by the APDC from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on "The Economic and Social Impact of Next Generation High Speed Broadband - Key challenges and opportunities".

In the first study, which contains a set of 17 predictions for the national market, focusing on the areas of telecommunications and media technologies (TMT) in Portugal, the conclusion is reached that telecommunications will weather the crisis, that the business model of the media will change dramatically and that the Portuguese will have new TV experiences in their homes. The work was based on answers to a set of questions and meetings, with the aim of gauging the vision for the future of TMT in Portugal and its convergence with the international trends identified in the annual study by Deloitte "TMT Predictions".

The second study, whose final version will only be presented in September, addresses the direct and indirect economic potential of next generation networks, including in terms of job creation. According to the presentation, high speeds will have greatest impact on health and social services (38% of total), mobility and logistics (20% of total) and security and justice (15%).
