Swedish presidency of the European Union - 2nd half of 2009

On 1 July, Sweden will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union.  The presidency website (available in Swedish, French and English) already details the work programmes and the official events calendar, as well as cultural events being organised in parallel.

The Swedish agenda focuses predominantly on the economic and financial crisis besetting Europe and on the issue of climate change.  At a sectoral level, the Swedish presidency will work on the revised regulatory framework for electronic communications, the Telecoms Package, whose approval is scheduled for the autumn.  Considering that the European Union needs a modern regulatory framework for electronic communications which is geared to the future, the presidency intends to give impetus to the development of new services which promote a more environmentally sustainable, competitive and innovative society.
