Technical trials of WiMAX/BWA - extension

In light of the interest shown by a number of entities in undertaking technical trials of BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) in the 3400-3800 MHz frequency band, as well as the proximity of the respective auction, ANACOM has decided, under the terms of paragraph 3 of article 5 of Decree-Law no. 151-A/2000 of 20 July, to extend the period allowed for carrying out such trials until 30 September 2009.

With respect to the 2500-2690 MHz and 5725-5785 MHz frequency bands, ANACOM will allow trials to be carried out upon request, subject to the presentation of the following details:

  • Required frequency band;
  • Required bandwidth;
  • Location where trials will be performed;
  • Description of technology;
  • Equipment specifications;
  • Period of time considered necessary;
  • Contact details.

It should be noted that, subsequent to the public consultation on the 2500-2690 MHz frequency band - whose final report was approved by determination of 17 June 2009 - this band will be made available in Portugal for terrestrial systems capable of supplying electronic communication services, having basis in Decision 2008/477/EC of 13 June 2008.

Furthermore, it is intended that the 5725-5785 MHz frequency band be made available for fixed and nomadic applications for Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA), with work still underway at the level of the CEPT (European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations) and the European Commission on co-existence with systems operating in this band.

The performance of these tests shall not give rise to any obligation on the part of ANACOM, nor to any right, expectation or legally protected interest in respect of the allocation of rights in any future authorisation processes regarding BWA applications.

ANACOM may request to observe the trials, and may also request information on their performance and respective conclusions.  It should be noted that the trials are to be carried out on a non-interference and non-protection basis.
