Schoolgirl from the Czech Republic wins UPU international letter-writing competition 2009


With a letter to her sister about a chocolate bar and how fair trade can improve working conditions in developing countries, 14 year old Dominika Koflerová of the Czech Republic has won the first prize in the 2009 International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People organised internationally by the Universal Postal union (UPU) and promoted in Portugal by ANACOM and CTT, who are both members of the UPU, a specialist organisation of the United Nations.

Second prize was won by a young girl from Viet Nam, Nguyen Dac Xuan Thao, and third prize was shared by Alina Beiner of Belarus and Dejan Kova? of Montenegro.

In the national competition, in the 1st category (9-11 years) Luís Miguel Pereira Magalhães from Marco de Canavezes was chosen and Daniela Tiago Matias from Odivelas was chosen in the second category (12-15 years). The letter winning the first category was selected to represent Portugal in the international competition, which saw entries from over 2 million children from around 60 countries.
