The importance of ICT to an energy efficient economy

On 9 October, the European Commission adopted a Recommendation arguing that information and communication technologies (ICT) should lead the way in making the transition to an energy efficient and low carbon economy, calling upon the sector to develop a framework to measure the sector's energy and carbon Footprints by 2010.

With the aim of exceeding the EU’s 2020 energy efficiency targets in as early as 2015, with a total reduction in carbon emissions of 15% and based on data obtained through common methods of measurement, ambitious targets may be set in terms of energy efficient and emission cuts.

This Commission Recommendation, as well as the Communication adopted in March 2009, identifies a concrete set of actions for the ICT sector, for the governments of the EU’s Member States and their regional and local administrations, which set out to exploit the capability of ICT to increase energy efficiency in the economy and throughout society.
