What are news feeds and how to use the syndication service on ANACOM's website

The feeds, technically referred to as RSS feeds, standing for Really Simple Syndication, allow users to keep informed of updates made to a website without presupposing the manual consultation of the section of interest of that same site. The latest headlines published on a site are stored locally on the equipment in use.

The syndication process makes the experience of the user more efficient both by allowing the optimisation of time taken to search for updated information on websites of interest; and because it allows greater comfort in the reception of information selected by the user.

The software regularly and autonomously visits the sites with feeds and compiles the news required by the user for later reading. To gain access to this data, the user must have an RSS reader to read the news (RSS reader or news reader), a condition that is satisfied simply by connecting a web browser, selecting the required folder and consulting the list of new available headlines. To obtain further information on the selected headline, it is always necessary to activate the hyperlink that the RSS displays and which leads to the detail of the web page.

There are various version of feeds, some web browsers allow the integration of the RSS reader, while the latest versions of browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera or Netscape, for example, already include this functionality. As an alternative, other independent applications can be downloaded from the internet which can be installed on any computer, PDA or Smartphone.

While the news readers of browsers provide the list of subscribed to news; the applications which can be downloaded from the web allow the compiled information to be saved on the computer.

Steps to be followed to subscribe to news Feeds

If you have an RSSreader integrated in the browser:

  • check that you have a news reader;
  • choose the information that you intend to receive by selecting the information categories using the RSS button available on the page you want to subscribe; or
  • in the right site list of this page.

If you don't have an RSS reader integrated in the browser:

  • copy the address of the hyperlink found in the category that you wish to subscribe to, and
  • enter it in the RSS reader; the compilation process is performed automatically.
