First quarter sees growth in optical fibre access to fixed services

/ Updated on 17.06.2013

At the end of 1st quarter 2013 (1Q2013), the total stock of main telephone accesses in Portugal was made up of 4.5 million accesses, falling 0.4 percent over the previous quarter (4Q2012) and increasing by 0.1 per cent compared to the same quarter of 2012 (1Q2012).  This comes in below the lower limit of the forecast range resulting from the estimated historical trend.

The penetration rate of main telephone accesses reached 43 accesses per 100 inhabitants, while the penetration rate of residential direct access customers was reported at 56.2 per 100 conventional dwellings.

Even while there was a 2.6 increase in new take-up of bundles supported over high-speed networks (optical fibre-FTTH/B and cable), this was not enough to offset the decline in analogue accesses, ISDN accesses, and accesses supported over mobile networks, which declined by 1.4 percent, 2.2 percent and 1.7 percent respectively.

The number of installed public pay-telephones continued to decline, falling to about 23 thousand in 1Q2013, (a decrease of 1.3 per cent over the previous quarter and of 9.4 per cent compared to 1Q2012).

At the end of this period, Grupo Portugal Telecom was responsible for 57.1 percent of all main accesses, 0.1 percent less than in 4Q2012. Grupo ZON Multimédia was the second largest operator with a share of 20.1 percent, increasing 0.4 percentage points over the quarter.

Volume of FTS voice minutes is reported within the forecast range resulting from the trend and estimated seasonal effects, having fallen 0.1 per cent in relation to 4Q2012 and increasing by 0.4 percent when compared to 1Q2012. In this quarter, the average duration of calls increased by 6 seconds in relation to 1Q2012, which may be associated with bundled offers allowing free calls to fixed network numbers.

By the end of March, each access consumed, 128 minutes on average per month in fixed-fixed calls, 14 minutes in fixed-mobile calls and 10 minutes in international calls.

FTS revenues, as a separable service and as part of a bundle of services, totalled 368 million euros in 1Q2013, in line with the value reported in 1Q2012.

According to Marktest's Barómetro Telecomunicações (Telecommunications Barometer), the average monthly charge payable for the separable fixed telephone service was 15.1 euros in 1Q2013, 1.8 percent less than in the previous quarter and 2.3 percent less than in the first quarter of 2012.
