ECTA publishes study on Europe's digital deficit

The European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA) has released a new study on ''Europe?s digital deficit: revitalising the market in electronic communications''. The report, which was presented on 3 March 2010, was prepared by the consultants Analysys Mason and had the goal of calculating the impact that increased competition in the electronic communications markets is having on the well-being of consumers; it also sets out to assess the current state of competition in the main markets of the European Union.

The study concludes that competition has been a main driver of choice, value and innovation in the telecommunication markets, leading the way in the development of new services, in reducing prices and in stimulating demand. The creation and widespread use of high-speed networks and services are important goals for the European Digital Agenda. The role of effective competition remains equally valid with the transition to fibre-based networks and high-speed mobile networks.
