Commission adopts i2010 Strategy

Following the approval of the i2010 Program, last February, the European Commission adopted on 31st May 2005 the Communication “i2010 – A European Information Society for growth and employment”. This document presents a strategic framework for the development of the information society in the European Union until 2010.

Building upon the Lisbon Strategy, which was revised at the March 2005 European Council, this Communication identifies three priorities: to create an open and competitive single market for information society and media services; to increase the investment in research on information and communication technology; and to promote an information society which is inclusive and available to all. The purpose is to consolidate the convergence of European policies for information society and media, having in mind the final goal of promoting the development of the European economy and society, by enhancing Europeans’ employment and quality of life.

In addition to these priorities, the Communication defined the measures the Commission should carry out. The following ones stand out: to issue policy guidance on e-accessibility and broadband (2005); to adopt an action plan on e-government and strategic orientations for ICT-enabled public services (2006); to launch demonstration projects for technological, legal and organisational solutions, in order to bring public services online (2007); and to propose a European Initiative on E-Inclusion (2008).

All EU Member states are expected to approve national plans that identify their priorities for the information society until October 2005.
