The main conclusions of the Communication of the European Commission (EC), released on 11 March 2008 and entitled ''Towards an increased contribution from standardisation to innovation in Europe'', indicate that standardisation can contribute to the development of a sustainable industry policy and of the potential of innovative markets, as well to the strengthening of the European economy.
The EC argues that standardisation should be adapted to growing international competitiveness, proposing a set of key points focused on supporting innovation, such as the voluntary use of standards, inclusion of new knowledge in standards or access to standardisation of all interested stakeholders, with the objective of increasing Europe's influence on global standardisation.
