OECD Releases Broadband Statistics

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released new statistics on broadband (fixed accesses) as of December 2009. These reveal the existence of 283 million subscriptions in the OECD countries, with the inclusion of Chile as a member of the OECD. The average penetration rate was of 23.3 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, representing an increase of 0.5 percentage points against the 22.8 registered in June of 2009.

In December of 2009, Portugal, where mobile broadband is dominant (with 2.15 million actual users of internet mobile broadband in the first semester of 2010), registered a total of 1.9 million fixed broadband internet access subscribers, corresponding to a penetration rate of 17.9 fixed broadband access per 100 inhabitants.

The OECD results also indicate a continuous growth of DSL technology representing a 60 per cent of access, followed by 29 per cent of cable and 11 percent of fibre connections. In reference to this last technology, Japan leads with 54 per cent of all broadband technologies with fibre, followed by Korea with 49 per cent.
