Meeting with Croatian delegation

A high-level meeting took place, on 19 February 2008, with a delegation from Croatia, which included members of the Croatian Telecommunications Agency (CTA) and the Competition Agency. The purpose of the delegation’s visit was to discuss various regulatory issues with ANACOM and to acquire a broader vision with respect to the management of a sectoral regulator and its relationship with its tutelage and with the body responsible for competition.

Croatia is one of the States currently preparing for entry into the European Union (EU), which it may achieve as early as 2009. The integration process is supported by the European Commission’s CARDS programme for the promotion of peace and stability in the Balkans. This programme, which was begun in November 2005 and ends in March 2008, is supported by the Croatian Telecommunications Agency and the Competition Agency, and has the aim of accomplishing the requisites demanded by the EU in the electronic communications sector.

The Croatian communications market was liberalised in 2004, since when there has been a gradual implementation of competition. In fact the current priorities of the government and sectoral regulator focus on promoting competition and national and foreign investment, in particular in fixed network and broadband services.
