National campaign against SPAM


With the intention of formulating a national action plan for the fight against SPAM (unsolicited email), a first meeting has been held between the bodies with relevant responsibilities, on the initiative of Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) through the Authority's Communications Security Office. The bodies involved include UMIC - The Knowledge Society Agency, Comissão Nacional de Protecção de Dados (CNPD - The National Commission for Data Protection) and Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional  (FCCN - National Scientific Computing Foundation).

The meeting, which took place on 31 January, began with a technical presentation covering the definition and evolution of spam, botnets (networks of computers controlled remotely from a server without user intervention) and technical analysis of email messages.

In the meeting that followed the participants presented the actions being taken by their respective bodies and set out, in a general way, the cooperation and information sharing being established at different points of time during the fight against spam, particularly: the receipt and handling of cases, investigation, identification of bodies with relevant competency for each specific situation, raising awareness, assessment of the national situation and international cooperation.

The next meeting has been scheduled for March.
