Study Group - SG 5 (Terrestrial Services) - WP 5A - Geneva

The fifth meeting of working party 5A (WP 5A), covering terrestrial mobile service above 30 MHz (excluding IMT), wireless access in fixed service and amateur and satellite amateur services, pertaining to ITU-R study group 5 (SG 5) (2008-2011 study cycle), was held last 10-19 May in Geneva.

Some 101 documents were submitted for appreciation by WP 5A, distributed among five subgroups according to the issues dealt with, as follows:

  • Subgroup 5A-1 – Amateur Service;

  • Subgroup 5A-2 – Wireless Systems including RLANs;

  • Subgroup 5A-3 – Systems for Public Protection and Trunking;

  • Subgroup 5A-4 – Interference and Sharing;

  • Subgroup 5A-5 – New technologies and systems.

The following matters stand out among the document analysed:

  • Completion of work on preparing the text for the CPM concerning point 1.23 of the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-12) agenda, which aims to allocate about 15 kHz in 415-526.5 kHz to amateur service with secondary status, guaranteeing protection of existing services;

  • Collaboration via its Subgroup 5A-4 on Interference and Sharing with other groups on WRC-12 agenda points 1.5, 1.11, 1.12, 1.13, 1.14, 1.18, 1.20, 1.24 and 1.25;

  • Revision of ITU-R Recommendation M.1652 concerning dynamic frequency selection (WAS/RLANs) with a view to protecting radio-determination service in the 5 GHz band;

  • Revision of new Recommendation on frequency bands for public protection and rescue. Radiocommunication systems in UHF bands in compliance with resolution 646 (WRC-03);

  • Continuation of work on revising the Reports ITU-R F.2086 on technical characteristics and applications of broadband wireless access in fixed service; and ITU-R M.1051-1 on public mobile telephone service with aircraft; and of Recommendation ITU-R F.757-3 on basic system requisites and performance goals for fixed wireless access using mobile technologies offering telephony and data communication services;

  • Continuation of work on revision of new Recommendation concerning intelligent transport systems (ITS) – goals and requisites;

  • Start of work on revision of the new Reports ITU-R M 2117 concerning radios programmed by software in amateur and satellite amateur terrestrial mobile service.
