ANACOM is representing Portugal at the 2006 Regional Radiocommunication Conference of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which is currently taking place in Geneva, Switzerland.
One of the great challenges that the conference is facing, is to find a ways of allowing analogue and digital broadcasting to co-habit on the radio frequency spectrum without causing interference. This is important as, although terrestrial digital television is already a reality in many countries, there are many other countries that are still protective of their analogue broadcasting systems.
In fact the first week of the conference was taken up debating the future of digital broadcasting, with ITU issuing a press release on the subject on 22 May.
Another of the conference's goals is to find responses to the current requirements of digital broadcasting, gaining maximum flexibility for the future use of the spectrum that will become available as a result of digital technology efficiency gains.
The conference, which acts as a forum for the Radiocommunication sector of ITU (ITU-R), brings together 700 delegates, representing 120 administrations of ITU member states. The final objective is to agree a plan for regions 1 and 3 (Europe and Africa and the Middle East) for terrestrial digital broadcasting in the 174-230 MHz and 470-862 MHz frequency bands. The current session, which is due to end on 16 June, is the second of two that were organized to this end, with the first having taken place in May 2004 (RRC-04).
ANACOM will publish the report on the first week of RRC-06 in the Regional Radiocommunication Conference (RRC-06) of this site.
