Athens hosted last 4-5 May the second meeting of the working group on Numbering and Networks (WG NaN), most of whose participants are regulators from various countries in the enlarged Europe. The group discusses numbering issues and identifies the impact of technological developments on regulation. It also draws up recommendations, reports and decisions concerning issues of common interest.
Highlights of the second WG NaN meeting include the final adoption after public consultation of the following documents:
- “Recommendation ECC(11)03 Numbering and Addressing for Machine-To-Machine (M2M) Communications Numbering and Addressing in M2M Communications”, which identifies different numbering/addressing solutions to accommodate machine-to-machine (M2M) communications/applications services;
- “ECC Recommendation on Calling Line Identification and Originating Identification”, which puts forward a set of recommendations to make CLI/OI more reliable, especially due to growing use of new technologies in communications networks, including next generation networks.
These documents will be submitted by WG NaN for final approval at the Electronic Communications Committee (ECC) plenary meeting this 30 June or 22 September.
Note also the approval for public consultation of the following ECC documents:
- “Draft ECC/DEC/(11)EE on Reserving the National Number Range 111 for Long Term European Harmonisation”, which decides to reserve the ‘111’ number in the national numbering plan (NNP) for future use;
- Draft ECC/REC/(11)07 on ECC Recommendation Usage and Reservation of National Short Numbers Beginning with 11X”, which recommends reservation of unused NNP numbers starting with 110, 113, 114, 115, 117 and 119 and that numbers from those ranges not be assigned to services which are not harmonised Europe-wide;
- Draft ECC/DEC/(11)FF on the withdrawal of ECTRA/DEC(96)01 Regarding a European Telephony Numbering Space (ETNS); ECTRA/DEC(96)48 Regarding a European Telephony Numbering Space (ETNS); ECC/DEC(04)07 on European Telephony Numbering Space (ETNS) Conventions; the +3883 code was recovered by ITU-T as it was not used in compliance with the allocation rules.
